Wordless Wednesday: Lent begins

  1. Would explain the significance of the candle holder? I'm assuming it has a place for a candle for the 40 days of Lent, but I've never heard of doing that before! It looks really neat!

  2. I'd love to! (Is it cheating to leave a comment on your own Wordless Wednesday post?)

The candle holder is our Advent to Lent to Ascension wreath, purchased here. The wreath is actually three separate pieces. The first piece has 24 holes, one for each day of Advent. A figure of Mary on a donkey journeys along with the candle until reaching the center of the wreath (Christmas).

For Lent, the wreath extends to 40 holds, with a figure of Jesus carrying the cross. The wreath is basically a countdown to Easter, and you can use it in whatever way works best for your family. You can light one candle and move it, along with the figure of Christ, one hole closer to the center of the wreath each day.

Because my oldest is only preschool age, we are choosing to add one candle each day. When all the holes are filled, Lent will be over. We use it as both a countdown and a conversation starter, talking about Jesus and Easter as we move the figure closer each day.

When he gets older, I have in mind the reverse - starting with 40 candles lit and removing/not lighting one each night, to be more reflective of the solemnity of Lent. We'll light them all back up on Easter Sunday as a big celebration of Christ's resurrection.
